At a glance, the Admired theme looks a lot like the open, airy themes common to light news / site hybrid themes for WordPress. All the usual WordPress 3 bells and whistles are supported, like multiple drag-and-drop menus, backgrounds, widgets and so forth.  However, once you drill down into the Appearance section of the Dashboard, you’ll find a section called Admired Options.
Admired Options
Eleven sections allow even non-technical users to tweak the theme in a variety of ways. While these aren’t intended to make the entire site fluid, it does allow a user to add personal touches as well as function.
- Layout: Choose alternative color schemes and modify the location and number of sidebars.
- General: Â Site-wide text colors, post thumbnails, calendar options.
- Fonts: Either use web-safe fonts or access Google fonts for typographical flair!
- Header: Custom logo, site title/description & menu colors.
- Sidebar: Background, text and bullet colors.
- Comments: Background, text and form colors.
- Footer:Â Scroll to top function, developer credit link, copyright information, additional footer text.
- Pagination: Text, background, hover colors.
- Social:Â Â Add and configure buttons for RSS, Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, YouTube, etc.
- Advanced: Turn off standard meta tags (good if you are using an SEO plugin). Custom CSS.
- Analytics:Â Incorporation Google Analytics or Clicky Analytics.

Hello, I have 2 questions please.
First, In the static front page, I chose “select” in both the front page and posts page. Question is the posts are shown in full in the main page, there is no part of the post and then a “read more” link.
Second How to add expandable posts with a read more link in the static page?

Good morning, Mary. Firstly, if you choose “select” for your home and blog pages but don’t specific a static page, WordPress should still use it or the theme’s default. In order to get a preview of your posts on your blog page (and the link to more/continue), you’ll have to tell WordPress where you want to cut off the preview. To do this, open an individual posts, place your cursor at the point you want to cut off the preview and click the Insert More button from the editor bar above your post content. Publish/Update the post. Some themes create an automatic excerpt based on a fixed length, but these can cut off the post in an undesirable location. If you want this automatic excerpt, you’ll need to alter some of the backend code of your site. Morning, John. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. To activate the second sidebar, you must select the page you want to have a second sidebar, change the template for that page to “Three Column Template” then Update/Publish the page. Now you should be able to set, edit and view widgets placed in the second sidebar area for that page. ONLY pages set to the Three Column Template will display the second sidebar.

While there is no feature allowing this in the Admired theme (or most themes for that matter), you can achieve this with some editing of the CSS, HTML and PHP of your WordPress site. This does require some familiarity with these languages and I strongly recommend making a backup before performing such edits. I tried to upload an image background from background uploader of them menu, but it didn’t show up. Precisly, it shows up just for the time that the site is loading in a browser, but then disseaperes. I tried tu upload it in FTP, and choose then from menu, backgrounds – choose an image as background!, but not working. Otherise evrithing else is just fine. Tahnks agin.

Hmn, in Appearances | Background, once you have uploaded or selected your background image, have you set “Display Options” (position, tiling, etc)? Display Options will not appear until you have selected your image.

Admired is a great theme, really like it! I am adding adsense to it, using the side column. I work well as I do not need to add it to every page. However, I would like to keep a two columns layout, but without the adsense content for the Home page. Any idea of how to get a different layout for the home page? Or keeping the same structure but changing the content of the side bar?

A couple different options come to mind. You could make a Home Page template page which does not contain the Adsense content and only use template for the home page. Alternatively, since you are placing the Adsense in the widget area, you could set up any number of widgets solutions that allow you to pick and choose what pages, categories, etc individual widgets appear in. Finally, if you are comfortable with PHP and/or Javascript, you could write some conditional code that hid the Adsense code on your Home page only. Hope this gives you some options. Hello Soji and thank you for dropping by. The Admired theme does not have this ability. In fact, normally you cannot put Google Adsense into the middle of a Post or Page in core WordPress either (it would strip out JavaScript as a security measure). Usually, Google’s Adsense code is placed in some part of a theme template part of the page or post (header, footer, sidebars, etc). However there are plugins and custom code modifications for WordPress that allow you greater flexibility. For example, allowing the insertion of Google Adsense into a Post or Page at fixed point (before/after more/cuts, for example) or allowing you to chose a specific spot when writing your Post or Page (usually with a shortcode). You may wish to peruse the WordPress Plugin Repository for some solutions. Hi Hody. I can’t take credit for this theme, it was created by Brad Thomas (see above). I think the confusion arises because the theme uses either a logo image OR a site title. To have a background image, you’ll probably have to edit your style.css file. #header-logo, #site-description and #site-title are a good place to start. If you are not comfortable mucking about with the CSS and graphics of your theme, you may wish to retain the services of a WordPress developer to make them for you. Best of luck!

Hi Chahat. The main menu bar color is controlled by going to Admired Options and then Header. Here you will see color selectors for the menus (standard, hover, dropdown, etc). Once you have chosen the colors you want, make sure to click on the Save All Changes button in the lower right corner of this page. Good luck.

I don’t see that option in the theme’s settings either, Jeff, so I don’t think you missed anything there. In core WordPress, you are able to alter the automatic thumbnail size generated by the Media Library, however. Settings | Media. That may be a good place to start. I do not believe this would alter old thumbnails retroactively though, so probably best to test it with a new, test post and images. From there, the Admired theme calls the thumbnails in several places, look for the_post_thumbnail(array(100,100) in the various loop files. Best of luck!

Hi, great article and a brilliant theme. With my fairly novice WordPress skills, how to I display both a logo and an ad banner in the header? I can create a logo any size required, I then want to be able to insert an ad banner to the right of the logo and change this on a regular basis.

Hi Jim, thanks for dropping by. The header image feature of Admired seems to really be designed for displaying a logo and probably isn’t well-suited to your need for banner advertisement. If it were my site and I wanted to embed Adsense, a rotating set of banners or a manually controlled banners , I’d probably re-code the PHP of the header.php (or create an alternate header.php). In the case of the later two, employing a plugin to make controlling the resulting ad rotation or swapping out banners less tedious (take a look at Adwit Banner Manager or Useful Banner Manager, both in the Official WordPress Repository). The pertinent section of the header.php file starts at
. If you are not comfortable editing PHP yourself, it should be a fairly quick task for a freelance WordPress developer.

Hi Caspar, I’m not aware of a setting that allows you to hide the Page title in the Admired theme, but you could add a little CSS to the theme’s style.css file to hide the Page title. Try adding .page .entry-header { display: none; } (I put it in the Content section just to keep things tidy). This should hide Page titles while leaving Blog Post titles intact. Best of luck.

Evening, Bryan. Are you using a header logo image instead of a title & description? If so find #header-logo in the Admired style.css and add background-position: center !important; to it. If you are still having problems, leave a link to your WordPress page.

I love the admired theme, and I hope you can help me with a few things. Is it possible to have a much more larger header?
I would like to style as well the menu bar, make it smaller and all the categories (pages) in one line. Now there is too much space between the categories. I would also like to change the font-family and the font-size.
And one more thing, to invite people to leave comment more easily, I wish “reply” could be more visible, may be on top?

Hi Lily, sorry about the slow reply, it has been a busy week. The changes you mention all sound possible, but wouldn’t definitely require some significant changes to the CSS (and possibly some graphics) to accomplish. That is one of the great things about WordPress and the open source approach, you can dig in and make those sort of changes. If you are not comfortable mucking about with the CSS and graphics of your theme, you may wish to retain the services of a WordPress developer to make them for you.

If you are not comfortable editing PHP, it is little more work, but you can use WordPress’s built in settings to remove that ability to comment on all FUTURE pages/posts by going to Settings | Discussion and un-checking the box labeled “Allow people to post comments on new articles”, then click “Save Changes”.
This method will require you to modify EXISTING pages/posts to remove commenting, though. Edit each post/page and un-check “Allow Comments” and click Update to save changes.
If you cannot see the Allow Comments option in your post/page editor, make sure “Discussion” is checked in the drop-down menu “Screen Options”. Best of luck.

Hey Kazayoushi. Thanks for swinging by. I’m not actually the author of this theme (I just reviewed it here on my site). That honor belongs to Brad Thomas over at WP Ultra (http://wp-ultra.com/). However, I can answer your question if you’re willing to edit the theme.

If it were my site and I wanted to embed Adsense, a rotating set of banners or a manually controlled banners , I’d probably re-code the PHP of the header.php (or create an alternate header.php). In the case of the later two, employing a plugin to make controlling the resulting ad rotation or swapping out banners less tedious (take a look at Adwit Banner Manager or Useful Banner Manager, both in the Official WordPress Repository). I don’t see that option in the theme’s settings either, Jeff, so I don’t think you missed anything there. In core WordPress, you are able to alter the automatic thumbnail size generated by the Media Library, however. Settings | Media. That may be a good place to start. I do not believe this would alter old thumbnails retroactively though, so probably best to test it with a new, test post and images. From there, the Admired theme calls the thumbnails in several places, look for the_post_thumbnail(array(100,100) in the various loop files. Best of luck!

Hi Chahat. The main menu bar color is controlled by going to Admired Options and then Header. Here you will see color selectors for the menus (standard, hover, dropdown, etc). Once you have chosen the colors you want, make sure to click on the Save All Changes button in the lower right corner of this page. Good luck.
I love your theme, but I am difficult to modify the header background.
When I update from theme option, the picture is not full width? how do I make full width, but the title text still on default position.
Hi Hody. I can’t take credit for this theme, it was created by Brad Thomas (see above). I think the confusion arises because the theme uses either a logo image OR a site title. To have a background image, you’ll probably have to edit your style.css file. #header-logo, #site-description and #site-title are a good place to start. If you are not comfortable mucking about with the CSS and graphics of your theme, you may wish to retain the services of a WordPress developer to make them for you. Best of luck!

Hello Soji and thank you for dropping by. The Admired theme does not have this ability. In fact, normally you cannot put Google Adsense into the middle of a Post or Page in core WordPress either (it would strip out JavaScript as a security measure). Usually, Google’s Adsense code is placed in some part of a theme template part of the page or post (header, footer, sidebars, etc). However there are plugins and custom code modifications for WordPress that allow you greater flexibility. For example, allowing the insertion of Google Adsense into a Post or Page at fixed point (before/after more/cuts, for example) or allowing you to chose a specific spot when writing your Post or Page (usually with a shortcode). You may wish to peruse the WordPress Plugin Repository for some solutions. Admired is a great theme, really like it! I am adding adsense to it, using the side column. I work well as I do not need to add it to every page. However, I would like to keep a two columns layout, but without the adsense content for the Home page. Any idea of how to get a different layout for the home page? Or keeping the same structure but changing the content of the side bar?

A couple different options come to mind. You could make a Home Page template page which does not contain the Adsense content and only use template for the home page. Alternatively, since you are placing the Adsense in the widget area, you could set up any number of widgets solutions that allow you to pick and choose what pages, categories, etc individual widgets appear in. Finally, if you are comfortable with PHP and/or Javascript, you could write some conditional code that hid the Adsense code on your Home page only. Hope this gives you some options. I tried to upload an image background from background uploader of them menu, but it didn’t show up. Precisly, it shows up just for the time that the site is loading in a browser, but then disseaperes. I tried tu upload it in FTP, and choose then from menu, backgrounds – choose an image as background!, but not working. Otherise evrithing else is just fine. Tahnks agin.
Hmn, in Appearances | Background, once you have uploaded or selected your background image, have you set “Display Options” (position, tiling, etc)? Display Options will not appear until you have selected your image.

Morning, John. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. To activate the second sidebar, you must select the page you want to have a second sidebar, change the template for that page to “Three Column Template” then Update/Publish the page. Now you should be able to set, edit and view widgets placed in the second sidebar area for that page. ONLY pages set to the Three Column Template will display the second sidebar.

First, In the static front page, I chose “select” in both the front page and posts page. Question is the posts are shown in full in the main page, there is no part of the post and then a “read more” link.

Good morning, Mary. Firstly, if you choose “select” for your home and blog pages but don’t specific a static page, WordPress should still use it or the theme’s default. In order to get a preview of your posts on your blog page (and the link to more/continue), you’ll have to tell WordPress where you want to cut off the preview. To do this, open an individual posts, place your cursor at the point you want to cut off the preview and click the Insert More button from the editor bar above your post content. Publish/Update the post. Some themes create an automatic excerpt based on a fixed length, but these can cut off the post in an undesirable location. If you want this automatic excerpt, you’ll need to alter some of the backend code of your site.
