Simple Content Reveal, Playing Hide & Seek With WordPress

Simple Content Reveal, Playing Hide & Seek With WordPress

Putting content on the web, even in a Content Management System, in the simplest form take the form of a linear page; a series of sentences, paragraphs and other media organized in the order in which they are meant to be read.  This allows the reader to skip ahead when it is convenient, but it can also disrupt the impact of information that needs to be consumed or “revealed” in a particular order.

Two cases in point I encountered…

The first was a friend who ran a personal blog where she posted riddles.  She want readers to have the time to consider the possible answer and even reply without seeing the answer.

In the second, a client had created an article which had a series of “reflective” questions that the reader was supposed to stop and consider before moving on to the elaboration/answer that followed.

In both these cases, we could have had the revealed content appear on a separate page (hyperlinked) or inserted a large amount of empty space (scroll down).  Both felt a bit a clumsy. Enter Simple Content Reveal.

After installation, your WordPress site has two powerful new tools.  The first is a “shortcode” which can be used inside posts and pages without any coding knowledge.  The second is a template tag which theme designer/developers can hard-code directly into themes.

By placing the “hidden” content between the shortcode created by the plugin, you create hidden chunks of content in your pages and posts that the visitor can click to toggle open. No new page load needed.

I'm the front-man of It's WordPress. I come from a diverse array of backgrounds, enjoying the opportunity to expand my knowledge base and skill set by re-inventing myself. I enjoy environments that focus on emerging information, technology and concepts. I put on the technical hat in my early 20s and never really looked back. I'm love technology and the internet, as well as the outdoors and avidly hike, kayak and camp every chance I get.
